Free the Books! Vol. 1

Book bans are being instituted across the country at an alarming rate. As purveyors of print and avid supporters of both free speech and our public library system, this is an issue we take to heart and now, to the press.
We’ve just created the first draft of a pdf worksheet to get you started in the fight against book banning. It’s full of resources to do a little reading and research, a list of actions to consider as you ink up the presses, and some inspirational prompts to get you going. We’re always open to suggestions and feedback and will be growing the list over time. Please share any actions you take so we can amplify them via this newsletter and beyond.
Below are two great examples of using the power of the press to inspire others.

This past month, Partners in Print was invited to bring Press Power to the inaugural Seattle Art Book Fair. PiP’s Press Power program brings letterpress educators, printing presses, wood type, and tools out to the community to create posters that amplify voices, encourage self-expression, and promote social justice. The words “Books Are” were pre-set in the beds of the presses, and attendees were invited to fill in the blank. The results were downright poetic, and some, when given the tools for using their outside voices, used them to shout about freedom of the press. Their inspired responses were then posted for all to experience.

I made this print, first off being inspired by the call that Starshaped Press had made, but also with being trans it really hits home even more for me. With trans-inclusive books being banned as well as books about and by POC, it's so important to spread a message in any way possible about what is happening. We need these books in schools, to teach kids about themselves and others, and to show different perspectives, other than the whitewashed and racist BS we have been fed for so long.

I know this is about the book bans, but I also believe the anti-trans bills and these book bans are tied together. Right now there are 474 anti-trans bills that are trying to get passed, and they aren't only directed at trans youth anymore. We need to stand up for the younger generations and for ourselves; we can't just keep letting these racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic cycles continue. With all that being said, I made these Ban Bigots not Books monotypes to hopefully get out into the world. These are all just one of one, each one being a little different but with the same message.
